Writing Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) and Résumés

This involves creating a concise, professional, effective document that outlines an individual’s personal details, qualifications, work experience, achievements and skills for prospective employers or academic institutions.

Generally a résumé is briefer, and more typical for new entries to the job market (e.g. high school or university graduates). Cvs, on the other hand, are longer, more detailed, and typical of people with longer experience. Crafting an impeccable résumé or CV invloves the following considerations. :

  • Understanding the differences between the two documents in terms of length, content and purpose
  • Tailoring the document to the specific job or program by emphasizing relevant qualifications and experiences
  • Ensuring that the document is well-organized, easy to read, and concise
  • Résumés should be 1 page, and 2 maximum.
  • CVs ideally should be 1 or 2 pages; however, can be longer according to experience and qualifications.

To ensure an effective résumé/ CV, the following guidelines should be considered:

  • Use power-packed words that convey the candidate’s accomplishments and skills accurately
  • Present information in a clear and succinct manner with bullet points
  • Include updated contact information, references, and a professional summary to enhance the document’s impact
  • Include a photo (if local regulations permit this).

Crafting impeccable résumés and CVs demands careful attention to detail. By tailoring the document to specific requirements, using direct language, and presenting information in a clear and concise manner, candidates can maximize their chances of success in securing employment or admission to academic programs.
